Area residents have an opportunity to hear ideas on property tax reform and ask questions during a public forum in Williston on Thursday.

The North Dakota Policy Council is hosting a property tax forum at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Airport International Inn.

North Dakota Policy Council Executive Director Brett Narloch said the forum is intended to get citizens thinking about property taxes and about possible solutions.

“Everyone knows the system is broken. What we’re trying to do is get people talking on how to reform property taxes,” said Narloch.

Narloch said the forum in Williston is the third in a series of forums to be held throughout the state in the coming months. There will be three panelists at the event. State Sen. John Andrist, R-Crosby will be taking part in the discussion along with North Dakota Taxpayers Association Executive Director Dustin Gawrylow and Bob Hale of Empower The Taxpayer.

“There’s a wide variety of ideas,” said Narloch.

Narloch said each panelist will have a few minutes at the beginning of the forum to outline their position and ideas on property taxes. He will then moderate the discussion by questioning each panelist’s views. The public will be able to take part in a question and answer session at the end.

Narloch said feedback at the previous forums has been positive and he expects it interest in the issue to grow as the November election approaches.

" I think a hard look at the state and local government spending. Even with abolishing the property taxes, people want to raise taxes somewhere else. That would be a tax shift, not a cut.

What needs to be done is to cut spending. "

" confused---I think this is a tea party, so it doesn't have to make sense. "

" Is the wish to abolish property taxes and up the sales and gas taxes? The operating revenue of the state government has to come from somewhere ... 15% sales tax and $5.00/gallon gas doesn't seem too appealing either. "
