An accident report from the North Dakota Highway Patrol said the accident happened at 6:58 p.m. Monday on North Dakota Highway 8, about six miles north of Stanley.
The accident occurred while Dale Byrd, 80, Kenmare, was traveling northbound from the Four Bears Casino back to Kenmare in his 2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette minivan on Highway 8. He was traveling at approximately 45 miles per hour.
Meanwhile, Stephen Boardman, 56, Ross, was traveling from an oil rig site northeast of Stanley in a 2004 Kenworth truck tractor-trailer and was stopped at the time of the accident.
Boardman's truck had gotten stuck as it was attempted to make a left turn onto a gravel road and its trailer was still partially extended into the northbound lane of Highway 8. Byrd struck the rear passenger side corner of the trailer and slid onto the west shoulder. The accident killed one of the passengers, Carol Byrd, 78, Kenmare.
Dale Byrd and another passenger, Maurine Gravesen, 78, Kenmare, were both injured and were transported by the Stanley Ambulance to the Mountrail County Medical Center.
Byrd's vehicle was totaled, with damages estimated at $10,000. Boardman's vehicle sustained $2,000 in damages.
The Mountrail County Sheriff's Department, Stanley Police Department, and Stanley Fire and Rescue also responded to the accident.
