GRAND FORKS — The Williston High School swim and dive team came up a little short this weekend in its quest for the school's first state championship in the sport.
The Lady Coyotes posted 262.5 points over the weekend to place second to Century in the 2009 North Dakota State Swim and Dive meet held in Grand Forks. The Lady Patriots won the event with a weekend score of 290. "I'm extremely pleased," said Williston swim and dive coach Jody Bolinske. "Sure, I would have liked to have won, but what our girls did was significant."
The team of Kaitlin Bolinske, Sadie Miller, Madison Porter and Kelsey Stenson won a state championship in the 200-medley relay. The four finished with a time of 1:48.98.
"That was an All-American time," coach Bolinske said. "That is significant."
Miller was also fourth in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:16.35, while Bolinske placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle. Bolinske also captured a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
"Our girls did a tremendous job," the Williston coach said.
Another key race was the final event of the meet. The 400-meter relay saw Century place first and Williston was awarded second-place after the Magicians were disqualified for a violation. That break helped secure Williston's spot in the standings.
"If we would have been fourth, we would not have taken second," Bolinske said.
Williston's chances at a state title virtually went down the drain in the freestyle races.
"It's the freestyle that got us," Bolinske said. "Our eighth and ninth graders didn't have the experience that those other girls have."
Postseason honors
Bolinske, Miller and Porter were selected to the first team All-State at the conclusion of Saturday's meet. Stenson and Alexis Klug were named to the All-State second team. For the second year in a row, coach Bolinske was selected as the Coach of the Year.
